Welcome, and thank you for visiting Therapy in Sussex
My name is Jacqueline Light and I am an AuDHD counsellor providing both short- and long-term counselling and psychotherapy to adult individuals and couples in private practice in Pyecombe near Brighton and online nationwide.
We all experience times of difficulty in our lives, when events or relationships feel overwhelming, or we can feel a loss of direction, stuck or purpose.
When we experience fear, we can freeze. In that moment we don't use our voice. We can take this into our adult life and it is no longer useful to do this, but we need to be kind to ourselves and not critical, as tempting as it is to do. Giving ourselves permission to use our voice and be heard and putting in our own boundaries can be powerful and liberating. Learn how to do this with confidence in our sessions together. Embrace your voice!
Talking to a trained professional can help you to make sense of those challenging times and offers a way through them, moving towards a better understanding of ourselves and our feelings.
Special interest in sexual abuse/assault, childhood /adult trauma and bariatric/emotional eating issues.
Life brings many challenges, and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. As a counsellor my role is to provide space and guidance to help you on your journey of self-discovery; to enable you to examine your life and make new, meaningful choices within it.
I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties or problems you are experiencing in a safe and confidential environment, with someone from outside your day-to-day life. Together we can explore how you are thinking, feeling and behaving in a way that leads to fresh perspectives - and perhaps a new understanding of yourself. Counselling isn’t about giving you solutions or advice, but empowering you to make your own changes.
My approach to therapy is a relational integrative one. This is a non-judgmental way of working, where the counsellor creates the right conditions to help you increase your self-awareness, insight and autonomy to makes the changes you wish to achieve. I can give you the challenge you are looking for, may that be gentle or more direct.
I passionately believe that listening to our own voice with love and expressing our voice to be heard, can be life changing and liberating. Freedom from silence and fear.
I am also able to support couples wishing to work through relationship issues in a calm space with boundaries so you both can share how you are feeling, feel heard and listened to. This is very important. Poor communication between couples is one of the biggest problems in breakdowns of relationships so bringing this back into your lives can be very empowering in itself. I offer a free introductory session to couples so please get in touch so we can meet together to discuss your relationships issues and goals. I specialise working with neurodivergent clients and couples.
Counselling takes place in a safe space, where you can meet with me, I will listen with sensitivity and empathy - and without judgement. In the therapy space your thoughts and feelings can be expressed freely and in confidence.
Using your voice can feel scary but learning to do this and feeling safe to do so can be all part of the process.
Difficulty with past trauma; sexual assault/abuse; childhood trauma; relationships; anxiety or panic attacks; mood swings or depression - many people face difficulties in their everyday lives that can be hard to get on top of. Counselling/psychotherapy gives us a set of tools we can use to help gain a better understanding of ourselves and our relationship with others. Awareness brings you insight into what’s causing these problems - and how you can move towards managing or resolving them.
Working together I can help you gain greater insight into the difficulties you are facing, help you understand why you act or react to them the way you do, and see how you can start to make better, heathier choices moving forward.

Very often we can feel shame about ourselves and not feel good enough as therapists as this can impact us in bringing ourselves fully to supervision. Due to the dear of being judged. I embrace the real issues therapists face and talk about it openly, giving you permission to bring yourself just as you are into our supervision space together because you are good enough. I am aware of the needs of being neurodivergent in our work with clients and our own self care and can support you in this process too, understanding as I'm living these issues too.
I am a L6/7 integrative and relational TA counselling and psychotherapy secondary tutor so can bring experience and knowledge to support you in your training needs.
